Bronze vase with dragon handles

A large bronze vase of baluster form, the body of rectangular section and tapering down towards a stepped platform base that flares outwards. Above the shoulder, the neck of the vase tapers upwards and terminates in a galleried rim. Raised bands of stylised ruyi heads are applied just below the shoulder and above the foot. Two handles in the form of stylised dragons, composed of cloud scrolls, are attached to the short sides at shoulder level. The base is engraved with a four character mark that reads ‘Kangxi third year’. The vase has a dark brown patina overall.
• This imposing bronze vase is mostly undecorated, except for the two simple bands of ruyi around the shoulder and base. The highly ornamental handles that at first sight look like clouds, but actually represent stylised dragons, provide a presumably - deliberate and striking contrast with the restrained design of the vase. |
