Cloisonné enamel presentation tray

Both the spurious Jingtai reign mark (1450-57) and the decoration of leaping horses often occur on 16th century cloisonné enamel objects. The decorative motif of playful lion dogs with brocade balls is frequently seen on deep bowls of the period; one such example, dated to the first half of the sixteenth century, is illustrated by Sir Harry Garner[1]. No other comparable tray appears to have been published, but a smaller rectangular tray for the presentation of scroll paintings, also decorated with confronting lion dogs and scrolling lotus on the sides, is in the collection of Dr. Pierre Uldry[2].
