Pair of Huanghuali low-backed chairs China, Ming dynasty 1368 - 1644, late 16th - early 17th century Height: (to toprail) 34 1/4 inches, 87 cm
At some stage, the joints of the top-rails and arm rests have been strengthened by pieces of white-metal (baitung), which provide a deliberate, rather pleasing contrast to the darker wood. This strengthening of weak joints is common practice in Chinese furniture and does not detract from its value or aesthetic quality.
A similar pair of low-backed chairs is illustrated in Masterpieces from the Museum of Classical Chinese Furniture by Wang Shixiang et al., page 64, no. 30. |
