Ink rubbing stone in zitan box

China, 19th century

An ink rubbing stone of rectangular format, the top is carved with an intricate cloud pattern, surrounding a semi circular cavity. The upper rim of the inkstone is slightly raised. The stone is of uniform black colour. The back of the inkstone is engraved with a single character, reading Bai, meaning “white”. The inkstone is contained within its original zitan box and cover.
