Pair of pottery architectural tiles
China, Jin or Yuan dynasty, 13th – 14th century
A pair of pottery architectural tiles, each of sturdily potted square form, moulded in high relief with a large phoenix perched on a blossoming branch of peony. The birds are depicted in mirroring compositions with their heads turned upwards and one leg lifted. The decoration is framed by a plain border forming the outside edges of the tiles.
Tiles of this type would have been mounted on facades of architectural structures, closely resembling tiles carved out of stone.
