Bronze vase with red and blue exterior by Hannya Kankei
Japan, Showa period, 1926 – 1989
A bronze vase, the bulging sides rising from a short foot rim and with recessed base. The sides rise up to a short, straight neck. The exterior of the vase is covered in a mottled blue patina with irregular red stripes, creating an interesting pattern. The base is impressed with an oval mark with the signature of the maker: Hannya Kankei.
Hannya Kankei was born in 1933 in a metal crafting family. Kankei is the 4th generation of the Hannya Foundry, based in Takaoka City, Toyama prefecture. Hannya Kankei started studying metal-crafting under his father from 1950 and excels in making works in sahari (a mixture of copper and zinc). He won numerous awards for his works.
